The city of Burnaby, B.C. has an estimated population of 216,871 which is an increase of about 2.33% since 2006. Burnaby offers great outdoor living and recreation with beautiful parks and lakes. Burnaby is the 3rd largest city in British Columbia behind Vancouver (of course) and close-by Surrey. The city was incorporated in 1892 and achieved city status in 1992, exactly 100 years after incorporation. Burnaby occupies 98.60 square kilometres. The Skytrain rapid transit system crosses Burnaby from east to west in two different places, making it more easily accessible. One runs through south Burnaby along the Expo Line (completed in 1986) and the other runs through North Burnaby along the Millenium Line (completed in 2002). Burnaby is a maturing, increasingly integrated community, which is centrally located within a rapidly growing metropolitan area. Burnaby’s characteristic has shifted from rural to suburban to largely urban. Still, Burnaby’s ratio of park land to residents is one of the highest in North America, and it maintains some agricultural land, particularly along the Fraser foreshore flats in the Big Bend neighborhood along its southern perimeter. Burnaby’s official flower is the rhododendron.
